Module Overview

The vast majority of bioinformatics software is designed to be run on the Linux operating system. A good working knowledge of Linux is therefore an essential requirement for those wishing to become adept in using bioinformatics software. This module is designed to provide an appropriate degree of background knowledge to enable participants to work comfortably in a Linux environment. No previous experience of working with Linux is required.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, participants will be able to:
  • Login to a remote Linux server
  • Run Linux commands, passing both arguments and options to commands
  • Navigate a Linux filesystem
  • Understand file permissions
  • Move, copy, delete and compress files
  • Edit text files
  • Redirect command outputs and errors
  • Manage running processes
  • Transfer data to/from a remote server
