Module Overview
A vast range of bioinformatics tools and databases are freely
available online, allowing researchers without specific
computational skills to carry out basic sequence analysis tasks.
This module introduces a range of bioinformatics databases
encompassing DNA sequences, protein sequences and protein
structure. Attendees will learn how to search for entries in
these databases either using text queries or by sequence
similarity, discover the wealth of data available through
database cross-references and identify the potential function of
uncharacterised protein sequences.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, participants will:
- Be familiar with the content of the ENA, uniport and PDB databases
- Be able to carry out text searches to locate relevant database entries
- Understand similarity searching using BLAST.
- Be able to identify protein domains using InterProScan
